The Story of the Eiffel Tower
The Eiffel Tower is one of the most famous landmarks in the world, but it wasn’t always so loved. Originally, Gustave Eiffel, the French engineer, wanted to build the tower in Barcelona. However, the city rejected his plan. But Eiffel didn’t give up. He found a spot in Paris to build his tower, and that’s how the Eiffel Tower was born.
At first, many Parisians didn’t like the tower. Some people even said it looked like a metal asparagus! The tower was very tall at 300 meters, but at the time, people thought it was only useful to the French army as a communication tower.
Over time, people started to see the Eiffel Tower’s beauty. Today, it’s one of the most visited attractions in the world. In 2002, it welcomed its 200 millionth visitor. What was once disliked is now a symbol of Paris and a must-see for travellers from all over the world.

The Eiffel Tower: From Rejection to Icon
Believe it or not, the Eiffel Tower was initially meant to be built in Barcelona, not Paris! Gustave Eiffel, the brilliant engineer behind the design, proposed the tower to the city of Barcelona, but the authorities rejected it. They believed the tower would ruin the city’s aesthetics and be an eyesore. Undeterred, Eiffel moved forward with his plans and found a welcoming home for his creation in Paris.
Interestingly, Parisians were initially not too thrilled about the structure either. In fact, many critics disparaged the tower, even calling it “metal asparagus” due to its unusual design. Despite the backlash, the Eiffel Tower was built in 1889 as part of the World’s Fair to showcase France’s industrial prowess.
The tower was never intended to be a permanent structure. It was initially planned to be dismantled after 20 years. However, it was spared from demolition because of its strategic value. The French army realised that the 300-meter height of the tower made it an excellent communications tower, useful for military purposes.
Thanks to this twist of fate, the Eiffel Tower survived, and today it stands as one of the most iconic and visited landmarks in the world. In 2002, it celebrated its 200 millionth visitor, cementing its place as an enduring symbol of Paris. What was once considered a “terrible” structure has become an emblem of modernity and architectural ingenuity.
